Kazakhstan Renews Coursera Deal to Push AI Skills and Credit-Bearing Courses

Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Science and Higher Education has signed a renewed partnership with online learning giant Coursera, embedding credit-bearing courses and AI literacy into the national higher education system. The deal, announced Tuesday, will equip tens of thousands of students with critical human, digital, business, and AI skills as the country races to meet the demands of a digital economy.

“The speed of digital transformation is radically reshaping the labor market, and requiring universities to rethink how their course offerings connect curricula to careers,” said a Ministry spokesperson in a statement. “This renewal ensures that every Kazakh graduate enters the workforce with skills that matter.”

Background

Coursera has served as the Ministry’s strategic skills partner since 2022. To date, over 235,000 students across more than 100 Kazakhstani universities have earned more than 500,000 certificates through the platform.

The original three-year agreement enabled students to access courses from the world’s leading companies and universities. The renewal expands that foundation with a sharper focus on AI, credit transfer, and language accessibility.

What This Means

Students will now be able to earn official ECTS credits toward their degrees by completing job-relevant certifications in fields such as Data Science, Cybersecurity, AI, Engineering, and Finance. Coursera’s 13,500 courses from over 375 global partners become available for credit, including offerings from Google, Anthropic, and other top AI firms.

The renewed partnership also prioritizes AI literacy at scale. Through the government’s AI-Sana initiative, every graduate will gain foundational knowledge of Generative AI and Digital Ethics. Coursera’s library of 1,100+ GenAI courses—including Google AI Essentials and Anthropic’s Building with the Claude API—supports this goal.

“AI literacy is now a foundational skillset for all graduates, irrespective of field,” the Ministry spokesperson added. “This partnership ensures that no student is left behind as AI transforms every industry.”

Kazakh Language Expansion

To overcome language barriers, over 4,000 priority courses—in AI, data science, machine learning, and GenAI—have been translated into Kazakh. The move aims to make world-class education accessible in the national tongue, promoting the Kazakh language in online education.
